Following the news that Oscar-nominated actor Graham Greene has died at 73, Ethan Hawke shared a warm tribute—and quietly revealed that Greene will still be seen later this season in FX’s new series The Lowdown. Multiple outlets confirmed Greene’s passing on Monday after a lengthy illness.
On Instagram, Hawke posted a photo of the two of them on set and wrote: “I had the pleasure of working with Graham Greene earlier this year. His career is legendary: Dances with Wolves, Thunder Heart, Reservation Dogs, to name a few… He has always possessed extraordinary grace, wisdom, wit, & depth. Working with him was shockingly fun. He improvised brilliantly and infused every moment with spontaneity & humor. I even got to break bread with him- and share some fries. I am shocked to hear of his passing. Blessed travels, friend.”
After Hawke’s post, TV Insider reached out to FX and reported that Greene will appear in two episodes later in the season. The role is still under wraps, but the confirmation means The Lowdown will serve as one of Greene’s final screen turns.
The Lowdown—created by Sterlin Harjo—premieres September 23 on FX (next day on Hulu). Hawke stars as Lee Raybon, a Tulsa journalist and self-described “truthstorian” whose obsession with getting the story right keeps landing him in trouble. The cast also includes Keith David, Kaniehtiio Horn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Tim Blake Nelson, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Kyle MacLachlan. FX has the official series page and premiere info here: FX: The Lowdown.
Greene’s presence in Harjo’s series makes sense; he was a standout in the final season of Reservation Dogs, and his career has long bridged film and TV with ease. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Dances with Wolves and went on to memorable roles in The Green Mile, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Wind River, and more, along with recent turns on The Last of Us and 1883. Obituaries from major outlets captured the scope of his legacy and his impact as a trailblazing Indigenous performer. AP and Reuters have the full remembrances.
For now, Hawke’s post says what a lot of fans are feeling: gratitude. Greene “improvised brilliantly and infused every moment with spontaneity & humor,” Hawke wrote. Viewers will get to share a bit more of that when his Lowdown episodes arrive later this season.
